Description
Production of BMW keys
To prevent break-in attempts, many modern BMW models are equipped with immobilisers. The effect of this defence system is based on the fact that an electronic control unit reads the information stored in the key’s on-board chip when the key is inserted into the ignition lock. If the alphanumeric code does not match the data stored in the memory of the control unit, the car will not start. Therefore, when manufacturing a BMW Key, it is not enough to simply cut the appropriate configuration of teeth on the metal blade blank, but the electronic part of the key must also be copied to ensure the correct functioning of the immobiliser system.
High-quality BMW car key manufacturing requires special equipment and a highly skilled technician.
BMW key production | Sequence of steps
The following steps are required:
Determine the configuration of the key blade teeth.
Determine the characteristics of the chip.
Manufacture the metal key blade using a CNC machine.
Record on the duplicate key that it belongs to the required BMW car model.
Mount the chip thus prepared on the key.
Check that all systems are working properly.
Enter the alphanumeric code on the duplicate chip into the electronic engine control unit by means of the programmer. This allows the existing BMW brand to be started using only this key. The immobiliser circuit can be switched off if necessary, but in this case the car will not be theft-proof and will be easy prey for criminals, as it can be started with any metal product that fits the geometric dimensions.
If there is only one key, it is better to make a duplicate in advance, which is much easier and cheaper than recreating it from the ignition lock. Losing a single key can lead to a locked car with locked doors. In this case, unlocking the car without damage is only possible with special tools.
