Using a duplicate key does not allow you to start the engine, or rather, you can only do so once and the key that was previously used to start the vehicle will cease to function. Such products operate on a variable code system. The code on the key chip changes according to a special algorithm when the engine is started again. The engine is started at the moment when the information in the car and in the key coincide.

Mercedes trucks (e.g. Actros) are an exception. For passenger cars, another category of key is used – the “fishy” key. The shape of this smart product actually resembles an aquatic animal. It is not mechanically operated, but electronically. During use, the contacts are connected and the lock itself is recorded by the coil. An inductive field is generated around the key, which is the power source. A circuit board built into the antenna facilitates the process.

It is clear that Mercedes electronic keys operate without a power supply. When one of them enters the lock and “understands” it, it “presents itself” to the lock using an infrared channel. The latter compares the data in the memory with the key’s information and transmits the information to the steering shaft’s electric interlock. The latter also compares the data received with the data already available. If the result is positive, it pushes the lock and the steering wheel is released. If everything went smoothly, the lock is released and the key is turned. The key can now be turned freely. That’s it, the engine is running.
