Manufacture of Volkswagen keys. Losing the ignition key of a Volkswagen car is a rather unpleasant episode in the life of a car owner, as the key has a chip embedded in it. Recovering such a device from the lock is a rather expensive service. It is therefore worthwhile to have an additional key in advance, ideally as soon as the vehicle is purchased. This is especially true in cases where the key is the only one.

Intelligent system

Modern German cars are equipped with a key fob with a microchip. The unlocking device communicates with the vehicle and confirms that it is the owner who wants to enter the car. If the TP is unlocked from the outside without such a key, the car will consider this as an attempt to drive away. One or more systems are locked: gearbox, steering wheel, etc.

The secret is that the key and the car are linked by a unique code that is specific to that particular TP. It is the selection and programming of the signal that is the most challenging part of making an unlocking device. Equipment that can reprogram a new key is only available from authorised dealers and specialised service centres.

It is not worth trying to make the key yourself: you may be able to make the mechanical part of the key. But uploading the necessary information to the chip is unlikely. If you try to select a unique code, the car will consider it an attempt to break in and will install an anti-theft system.

In addition, after programming the numeric code, additional functions must be assigned to the key: remote unlocking of the doors, boot, closing of the windows and panoramic roof, etc. Again, only specialists can add such commands to the chip.
Thus, the manufacture of Volkswagen car keys is a responsible and labour-intensive process. It requires the efforts of skilled technical staff, otherwise the car’s most important systems could be blocked.
